The Use of Technology for Second Language Learning and Teaching: A Retrospective

At the end of that century, it seems appropriate to look back at the numerous technological innovations that have substantially changed the scene where L2 instruction takes place. It seems that new technologies-revolutionary are normally regarded as revolutionary from a pedagogical standpoint as well.  It has been exampled by such an audiovisual technology such as television, telephone, radio, or filmstrip.

In teaching device, there two kinds of influencable devides which can be applied in learning, such as conventional and unconventional teaching tools. The former,  Pond (1963) described the use of blackboards and overhead projectors. The rest, it has been provided, for instance, the audio-active voice reflector, the spectrograph.

Referring to language lab, it has both side of point of view which positively Angelis (1973) stated that language labs “can be used to advantage in learning to hear what are usually difficult sounds or sound sequences” (p. 104). On the contrary, it negatively and poorly produced commercial tapes, insufficient effort to make structural drills meaningful, selection of materials without learner appeal, lack of programs for advanced students, and little faculty involvement

Technology provides a useful background for future studies in the area of research and pedagogy. Whereas most “new technologies” (radio, television, VCR, computers) may have been revolutionary in the overall context of human interaction, it is not clear whether they have achieved parallel degrees of pedagogical benefit in the realm of L2 teaching.

THE OUTLINES :
INTRODUCTION
1. General Statement : According to Wikipedia.com, technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques,craft, systems, or methods of organization. It can be also as the application of knowledge to solve problems or invent useful tools.

2. Thesis Statement : For all, based on my perception, In learning method, the usage of technology has an important role to assist and ease the process of learning for students.

BODY
Based on my arguments, there are many various reasons why technology affects to teaching process as media learning.

1. First, the learning method will be interested in attracting students’ attention during learning process.
2. Next, teaching materials will be well-organized to emphasize students’ understanding and possibly to aim the goal purposes of learning.
3. The following, the method will make sense to share about the lesson creatively. It is not only conducted by the verbal communication, teacher centered, but also the students being active to respond the materials.
4. The last, students will take some action in learning activity, not only focusing on what teacher explains, but they will more observe, research, or even demonstrate to the object.

CONCLUSION : In short, related to the topic above, it can be concluded that technology nowadays has already given some profits in teaching method particularly. However, it has already assisted and applied to ease the learning process generally.

THE PROFIT OF TECHNOLOGY AS LEARNING MEDIA

According to Wikipedia.com, technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques,craft, systems, or methods of organization. It can be also as the application of knowledge to solve problems or invent usefull tools. In education, it can be exampled such as the usage of LCD, projector, computer and many others. it absolutely influences the process of teaching for all teachers as the users to give or share about the material to the students basically. For all, based on my perception, in learning method, the usage of technology has an important role to assist and ease the procces of learning for students.
Based on my arguments, there are many various reasons why technology affects to teaching process as media learning. First, the learning method will be interested in attracting students’ attention during learning process. Commonly, students will be bored at only listening to teacher’s explanation during the lesson. It means that teacher is only centered at class while students gets no action to do but listening. By applying the provided technology at class, students will keep on paying attention and enjoying more what the teachers present such as LCD, computer, projector to help them.
Next, teaching materials will be well-organized to emphasize students’ understanding and possibly to aim the goal purposes of learning. Many students are confused and blank when they feel like being forced to understand the monotonous presentation. As the result, they will have no idea to aim the material. Therefore, the technology role should be implemented well to decrease such this misunderstanding. At least, students will be able to catch what materials are about.
The following, the method will make sense to share about the lesson creatively. It is not only conducted by the verbal communication, teacher centered, but also the students being active to respond the materials. This is one of the purpose why technology becomes the urgency in transferring and connecting the lesson shared and the students’ result. According to Miarso (2004), the utilization of technology educational process will support the quality of learning in gaining the educational purposes.
The last, students will take some actions in learning activity, not only focusing on what teacher explains, but they will more observe, research, or even demonstrate to the object material. It means that it also trains to the students to expand their own understanding of the material into some actions related to the lesson given.
In short, related to the topic above, it can be concluded that technology nowadays has already give some profits in teaching method particularly. However, it has already assisted and applied to ease the learning process generally.

Campus-Life-Black

The outlines        :

General statement         : Campus life can’t be escaped from the main role why someone has a strong intention and reason to bring about their further education life.

Thesis statement             : Therefore, there are some current causes and effects why some people want to bring their next education in campus life.

Cause    :

  1. As the self support to continue the higher advanced education in demanding some knowledge.
  2. As the obligation to rise a prestige up compared with others in educational graduation.
  3. They have a strong aim to increase a properous life in economical level someday.

After conveying some causes why people should enter in campus life, they must have also a better result refered to the student’s activeness in campus.

Effect    :

  1. The students will be more independent in adapting with campus environment such as being more critical in giving an argument.
  2. Their future life will be more educated to get a bright life related to what majors they take as the best choice.
  3. Getting more experience in organization and having lots of chance to enlarge a link with others.

Conclusion          : In brief, campus llife absolutely has an important role for some people considered to some causes and effects they feel inside. The reason why they take an education in campus and the result from it must be declared clearly based on their aims and goal after having a life in campus.

Campus life can’t be escaped from the main role why someone has a strong intention and reason to bring about their further education life. Moreover, it is frequently stated that having an university status is an expectation for common students to keep along with their education in campus life. Therefore, there are some current causes and effects why some people want to bring their next education in campus life.

Related to the causes, some people have already had some reasons as the cause why they take the next education in campus life. The former is as the self support to continue the higher advanced education in demanding some knowledge. Many people particularly have a better arrangement for their education commonly. They will not stop their education only for a low level graduation in senior high school, but they currently aim to have a next as the demanding some knowledge more and more.

The following, in some cases, they have an obligation to rise a prestige up compared with others in educational graduation. A low level graduation is not popular anymore. Someone having the last education in senior high school doesn’t guarantee them to get better job fields easily with their last graduation. They try hard to continue a next education as high as possible they reach.

Furthermore, they have a strong aim to increase a properous life in economical level someday. Commonly, someone with a last diploma as the university students will get lots of chance in submitting their application letter to apply a jobs in several companies. This is undeniable anymore that some people can also build the job field with their own excess in which somebody else can cooperate together in one benefit.

After conveying some causes why people should enter in campus life, they must have also a better result as the effect after having a life in campus refered to the student’s activeness in campus.

As the effects, the students will be more independent in adapting with campus environment such as being more critical in giving an argument. It also give an understanding that an university student have a better intelligence than others in sharing opinion about several cases generally.

The next, their future life will be more concetrated to get a bright life related to what majors they take as the best choice. It happens when students really wants to predict what job field they want to take. For instance, when they take a major in education, they will probably be a teacher in school.

The last, they will get more experience in organization and have lots of chance to enlarge a link with others. It probably comes true when they connect with the publics in having better relationship. Several chances to get more information about job will be easy to achieve.

No weak reason to gain what impossibilities in this reality. This sounds really great to discribe my personal impressive experience in Jogja 18-19 April 2015. There was a great and first challenging competition i have ever joined. It was a national debate british parliamentary style which conducted in Islamic State of University Jogjakarta. Many talks i ought to share to review what kinds of lots activities i did during staying over there. This is only to remind me how wonderful my sacrifice to compete this competition.
Those were started by the previous days before joining at he competition. At first, started by how to procced this application. Basically,I did not aware that my university, IAIN Salatiga, got the invitation letter from Student Organisation UIN Jogja. Informed by the chief of Communicative English Club (CEC), i was shocked with this sudden informaation. I tried to clarify and look aver first about the truth. It was really true. Oh my dear, with this short duration, Should i bring about this?, I said. Without knowing what will happen to next, i decide to recieve this form accidentally. Just wanna get something new in my life. That’s i thought in my mind.
On Friday, i prepared to go to UIN Jogja with my friend. Surya. He was also my partner in one team mate as the delegation from campus. Fortunately, the weather was on my way. It was so bright to have a trip in Jogja. Arriving there, i needed a help from my friend to have a homestay during this trip. Surprisingly, i run into with my old friends from Matholi’ul Falah Kajen. He was my junior who provided me a empty room to stay. I thanked fully to him.
On Saturday, that was a challenging competition held in UIN Jogja. I was so impressed and shocked at how could the participants come from all several universities in Indonesia. For instance, UGM, Undip, UNNES, ITB, UIN Makassar, UIN Jakarta and many other weel known universities. And finally, this competition had been finished on Sunday by UGM as the 1st winner, Unnes as the 2nd, and ITB as the 3rd.

A. REVIEW MY PREVIOUS POST
As the previous post i published, it is stated that I have a obstacle in pronunciation in which how to pronounce some words fluently is my goal description. Frequently, i am out of confidence when i want to pronounce a complicated word i have never found before. It seems really hard to give more understanding to the listeners when i am in fault. However, this case absolutely needs taking some points of resolution such as solutions, sharing to friends in same case, goals, and others.

B. FRIENDS IN SAME CASE
Unexpectedly, it happens also to my friends who have the same problem in pronouncing the words well. They are Anas Sofyan, Ahmad Chudhori, and Adri Muzakka as my classmate. We talked over to release a big deal discussion about this case on Tuesday, 28th April 2015 in Lab language. We currently have some similarities which are inclined to lots obstacles in practicing some words in good pronunciation. We realize that It’s difficult to pronounce English words because English pronunciation is tricky , and the vowels have many different pronunciation, for example : the letter ( a ) in the two simple words : “car” and “cat”. None of us gets easy to guess the correct pronunciation when some words seem complicated words.

C. SOLUTIONS
Finally, after having a short discussion with them, i found several solutions referred to some problems above. I try to collect my detail mistakes firstly, and i find the shortcut or the simple way to tackle pronunciation issues.
The first, learning the phonetic transcriptions and using a good dictionary with an audio recordings of the words are the chosen way i decided. And also listening as much as i can and practice reading aloud will improve my pronunciation skill. Additionally, watching movie can be also a source of learning pronunciation directly in keeping on what native speaker said in conversation. That easily increases more my understanding.

The following, i try to study each group of phonetic transcriptions alone and practice them with a clear understanding to the differences between them. The highly recommended dict is Oxford Dictionary as the general handbook for learners in improving vocabulary or pronunciation skills with the trusted transcription. It truly happens to me after studying each transcription of related words i purpose. At first i seem doubt how to pronounce it well, but furthermore, by opening Oxford, i have just got the point what to pronounce correctly.

The next, The effective solution i get is the voice training. If i don’t have a chance to talk to native speakers or people with good pronunciation, so the best way is to record my voices and repeat it many times to notice our mistakes and correct them. This way can be effective and at the same time.

D. MY GOALS
Related to my goal, those solutions hopefully will improve my pronunciation better in any kinds of English words i pronounced. Even though, i don’t have the right source to get a right pronunciation educationally. Also, i don’t have professional teachers to teach me how to pronounce right. But at least, i would like to deepen my ability to overcome some problems by tackling several solutions above. In addition, those solution doesn’t need any extra burden to spend my time. I only need some devices to support my self-learning in order to expand easily some advanced progress.

E. IS IT WORKING?
That will be a question for expectation. Well, after doing several ways above, it is really unbelievable that my pronunciation is increased smoothly. Even if i sometimes find a small disturbance to utter some words correctly. Furthermore, i believe that everything needs a process. This is namely a process to overcome this obstacle. In fact, it really works to me and give me more understanding.

F. HOW LONG IS IT APPLIED?
Related to this question about how long it is applied, it mainly reflects to my effort to improve this subject. As long as i do it properly and habitually, it absolutely can be stuck on my memory. Because i realize that pronouncing the words correctly needs more practicing and applying it. It couldn’t be predicted accurately how long it will work. It is essential that the sooner i apply those methods, the better my pronunciation later.

British and American English

Thus, it refers to two kinds of English language most commonly used in several countries. Those are British and American English style in which many colleagues could not distinguish specifically. Therefore, here are the similarities and differences between British and American English in particular.

Both of them have the same similarities which could be predicted by English learners well. Two kinds of this style are currently applied in English language. So far, they are used to communicate and practiced by using English as the pattern of communication. In spoken, they are similarly uttered by English as a second language in western commonly.British and American English are the reference norms for English as spoken, written, and taught in the rest of the world, excluding countries where English is spoken natively such as Australia,Canada,Ireland and New Zealand.

After conveying few similarities of those styles, it is important also to know what some differences which are closed to both of them distinctly viewed from several perspectives.

There is little difference between British English and American English tends to only enrich communication and does not pose a problem or difficulty in communicating. The differences could be distinguished from lots of the use and application in communication context fro some learners. Here’s the difference of English British and American based on its use.

Spelling becomes the first aspect which refers to some words pronounced in both British and American.British spelling tends to retain many words of French originally while American English directs to spell a word which is closer to the way they pronounce it, and also they eliminate the lettersnot required.

Here are some examples between British and American spelling. British English: centre, theatre, realise, catalogue, programme, travelled, neighbour, grey, plough, to practise (verb), practice (noun), cheque (noun)American English: Center, theater, Realize, catalogs, programs, Traveled, neighbor, gray, plow, to practice (verb),practice (verb), check (noun)

The following aspect is about pronunciation. Americans usually pronounce the letter “r” with their tongues rolled back and pressed them together to the palate mouth while most British people do not pronounce the letter “r” in the word, especially if there is the final word.In American English the word “can” and “can not” sound very similar, while in English British, you can distinguish them clearly.Americans tend to pronounce words like “reduce”, “produce”, “induce”, “Seduce” (verbs that ending in “duce”) with more relaxed, which means that after the letter “d” followed by the sound / letter of  “u”. In the contrary, In British, it happens after the letter “d” added by “j”. Americans have a tendency to reduce the word with eliminating some letters. For instance, the word “facts” in American English is pronounced the same as the word “fax” –The letter “T” is not pronounced.In American English, the letter combination “cl” in words like “cling”, “climate”, “club” etc., sounding more fricative. You can produce this sound with thrilling vocal cords. Emphasis is also sometimes different words.For example, the word “details” to get the emphasis on the letter “e” in British English and the “ai” in the United States.

The last aspect is about vocabulary which is sometimes nearly difficult to understand and compare both in spoken and written English. The only key to master and differ those related vocabulary is memorizing and often look up some words from dictionary such as Oxford and Longman dictionary. Here are some few examples of British : lift, boot, autumn, litter, cross, road, trousers, while American : Elevator, trunk, fall, garbage, crossing, pants, etc.

In brief, both British and American English have some similarities and differences based on related aspects commonly.For similarities, both of them have currently practiced by using English at all and taught in the rest of the world, such as Australia,Canada,Ireland and New Zealand. For differences, they commonly are diversified in some uses such as spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary. In fact, for some learners in school, they prefer to use British as the English subject in practicing and communicating dominantly.

POP AND ROCK MUSIC

  1. General statement : Music is any kind of sound arranged and produced intentionally by a person or group to create rhythm, or melodious songs.

         Thesis Statement :Therefore, in this case, it sounds great to discuss about the differences and similarities between pop and rock music particularly.

  1. Differences :

1st: The first different is that pop music tends only focuses on the vocals in common. Inversely, rock music more tends to focus on its musical instrument generally. Thus, that is specifically  characteristic sound of rock music.

2nd: The second different is about the music stream of them. Basically pop music is softer in producing a voice and intonation.On the contrary,the stream of rock music beats faster. Its musical instrument is little bit hard, so it sounds noisy to hear.

3rd: The final different is about the appearances. Pop singers show their dress on the stage which looks more neat and interesting. In opposite, the rock singers are usually used to wear untidy dresses in their performance.

The final different is about the appearances. Pop music singers’ style is totally different from rock singers. Besides both differences between pop and rock music, it also needs a discussion about the similarities which related to the kinds of these style musics.

To summarize, both pop and rock music have lots of differences and similarities signed by several factors.In differences, the first is that pop music more tends focus on vocals, whereas the rock more tends to focus on its musical instrument. The stream of pop music is softer, whereas rock music is harder and noisy. And the performance of pop singers is neater than rock singers. Additionally, in fact, both of them have the same similarities also which refer to the kinds of same musical instruments, such as a media to express the expression of song writer which favored by young people. However, those differences and similarities of pop and rock music above are still popular today.
